Kommunen bildades som så kallad storkommun vid kommunreformen 1952 genom sammanläggning av de tidigare kommunerna Tengene, Bjärby, Flakeberg, Flo, Hyringa, Håle, Längnum, Sal, Särestad, Trökörna, Täng och Ås.
